Rhinoplasty is one of the most sought-after cosmetic procedures, known for enhancing facial harmony and correcting breathing issues. Before you move forward with the surgery, though, you likely want to know what the healing period involves.
At Southlake Plastic Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Mark E. Mason and Dr. Matthew Novak, know that patients often feel a bit anxious before rhinoplasty. They also know that understanding the recovery timeline can ease these feelings and ensure a more positive experience.
Week 1: Rest and Swelling Management
Immediately after the procedure, you’ll have a nasal splint and possibly internal packing. Expect bruising around the eyes, swelling, and mild discomfort. Keep your head elevated and apply cold compresses as directed. Most people feel well enough to move around the house by day 3–4, but should avoid any strenuous activity.
By the end of the first week, your surgeon will typically remove the splint and sutures. You’ll start to see the shape of your nose emerge, although swelling is still present.
Week 2: Returning to Normal Activities
At this point, bruising begins to fade, and much of the visible swelling subsides. Many patients feel comfortable returning to work or school. While you’ll look and feel more like yourself, your nose will still be healing internally — don’t blow your nose or wear glasses unless advised otherwise.
Weeks 3–4: Subtle Refinements
During weeks 3 and 4, residual swelling continues to decrease. You can likely resume light exercise with your surgeon’s approval, but you should still avoid contact sports or anything that risks trauma to the face. Your nose will look more refined, though the final outcome is still developing.
1–3 Months: Ongoing Healing
The majority of swelling subsides within the first three months. Your nose takes on a more natural shape, and breathing improves if functional corrections are made. Attend all follow-up appointments so your surgeon can monitor your progress.
6–12 Months: Final Results
Complete recovery and final results can take up to a year, especially in the nasal tip, where swelling lingers longest. Be patient — the long-term outcome is worth the wait.
