Day Before Surgery Instructions

Preoperative Education

Nothing by Mouth (NPO):

Do not eat or drink anything after midnight unless otherwise instructed by your provider. This includes water, gum, mints, and candy.

Preoperative Education

Medications:

Please bring all medications we have prescribed for you to your appointment, including prescriptions and over the counter medications.

You may take medications that have already been approved at your pre-op appointment.

If you were ordered Valium (diazepam) and are feeling a bit nervous, you may take one pill with a small sip of water the morning of surgery about 30 minutes-1 hour prior to your arrival time. This is optional.

If you were ordered Emend (aprepitant) to manage post-operative nausea, you may take that with a small sip of water the morning of surgery about 30 minutes-1 hour prior to your arrival time.

Instructions for Medications You Already Take (If Applicable)

Please TAKE these medications the morning of surgery:

  • Beta blockers (labetalol, metoprolol, propranolol, atenolol, etc.)
  • Calcium channel blockers (amlodipine, diltiazem, verapamil, nifedipine, etc.)
  • Hydralazine
  • Heartburn/acid reflux medications (omeprazole [Prilosec®], lansoprazole [Prevacid®], pantoprazole
    [Protonix®], etc.)
  • Levothyroxine (Synthroid®)
  • Seizure medications (carbamazepine [Tegretol®], valproic acid/divalproex [Depakote®], levetiracetam
    [Keppra®], lamotrigine [Lamictal®], etc.)
  • Cholesterol medications (statins) (atorvastatin [Lipitor®], rosuvastatin [Crestor®], simvastatin [Zocor®],
    pravastatin [Pravachol®], etc.)
  • Inhalers: Use your inhaler(s) as you normally would on the morning of surgery and bring them with
    you to the surgery center.

Please DO NOT TAKE these medications the night before OR morning of surgery:

  • ACE inhibitors (lisinopril, benazepril, enalapril, captopril, etc.)
  • ARBs (losartan, valsartan, olmesartan, candesartan, etc.)
  • Diuretics (furosemide/Lasix®, hydrochlorothiazide [HCTZ], spironolactone, etc.)
  • Tricyclic (TCA) antidepressants (amitriptyline, doxepin, etc.)
  • MAOI antidepressants (phenelzine/Nardil®, isocarboxazid/Marplan®, tranylcypromine/Parnate®, etc.)
  • Oral diabetes medications (metformin, glyburide, glipizide, etc.)
  • Any other medications your provider instructed you to hold during your pre-op visit.

Preoperative Education

For Body Procedures:

Please shower the morning of surgery using Hibiclens® antibacterial soap from the neck down. Avoid the face, eyes, ears, and genital area. After showering, do not apply makeup, deodorant, lotions, creams, perfumes, or other products. It can interfere with prep solutions and monitors in surgery. Please remove all jewelry and contact lenses prior to arrival.

Preoperative Education

For Facial Procedures:

Please shower normally the morning of surgery, washing your face thoroughly using your regular facial cleanser. After washing, do not apply makeup, deodorant, lotions, creams, perfumes, or other products. It can interfere with prep solutions and monitors in surgery. Please remove all jewelry and contact lenses prior to arrival.

Preoperative Education

What to Wear:

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing that buttons or zips in the front and shoes that are easy to slip on and off. Button down pajamas, zip up hoodie sets, or recovery gowns with the front closure are all great options.
