The Perfect Pre-Wedding Skin Routine Before You Say, “I Dew”
Every bride wants to look their absolute best on their wedding day, and our team at Southlake Plastic Surgery & Med Spa would love to help you get there.
The best time to start your wedding beauty prep was yesterday. And the second-best time is now! Trust us, you don’t want to wait until the last minute to get the ball rolling.
The sooner you visit us for a bridal consultation, the sooner we can set you on the path of looking your best for the day you say, “I do!” Besides in-office pre-wedding aesthetic treatments, we can also help you overhaul your wedding skincare routine for even better results.
The ultimate glowy wedding skincare routine
Before we break it down for you, it’s important to note that we won’t spill any big secrets here or recommend an overly elaborate 12-step routine. The 2 most important factors for getting glowing skin for your wedding day (or any day) are consistency and quality.
To see payoff from any skincare product(s), treatments, or practices you invest in, you must act consistently and you need to use products with high-quality ingredients.
Cleanse
Depending on your skin type, you may not need to cleanse your skin every morning. For example, our brides-to-be with skin that can easily become dry can likely get away with just using a cotton round and micellar water or hydrating essence to start their morning routine.
Everyone, however, needs to take off their makeup and double cleanse their skin nightly. Even if you don’t wear heavy makeup, double cleansing with an oil-based cleanser and then a water-based cleanser ensures all the dirt, debris, oils, and other gunk you picked up throughout the day gets out of those pores. Note: A makeup wipe alone is NOT enough to remove your makeup NOR cleanse your skin properly.
We recommend finding an oil-based makeup removing cleansing balm and following with one of the SPS brand cleansers that’s best for your skin type.
Brighten
If you want to get extra-bright skin for your wedding day, and you don’t use vitamin C products, what are you waiting for?! Get on it, girl! Vitamin C products can fade dark marks from sun damage or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation PLUS regular use can stimulate collagen production in the skin.
Vitamin C can also support your SPF products, neutralizing free radicals created by UV exposure on the surface of your skin.
If you think that vitamin C doesn’t work for you, we will bet you haven’t been consistent in your use, or the product you currently use may be the incorrect form or strength for your skin. There are also plenty of other ingredients out there that work to brighten the skin. During your initial wedding skincare consultation, we can help you choose a skin-brightening product, which may or may not include vitamin C, that will work best for your skin.
Our favorite brightening products:
Exfoliate
If you’re only skimming this article, we hope you catch this: Step away from the grainy face scrubs, and no one gets hurt! (We’re looking at you, former St. Ives lovers 👀)
When we bring up exfoliation in a facial skincare routine, we also want you to know that too much exfoliation is indeed possible, and it can have disastrous effects on your skin (think redness and flakiness—not what you want to see on your wedding day). This is why we recommend gentle exfoliation methods and suggest you start only at once or twice a week until your skin adapts.
Our favorite products to exfoliate away dead skin cells and other imperfections include ones that contain AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) like glycolic, kojic, or lactic acid or retinol (a vitamin A derivative). Use these products only at night, and make extra sure you wear SPF daily to protect your shiny new skin cells!
Protect
It’s 2021, and everyone knows that the sun has serious negative effects on the skin. Besides dulling your complexion and speeding up the natural aging process, UV exposure is the most preventable risk factor for skin cancer. Additionally, most cases of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, are directly attributed to UV exposure.
While you probably don’t have the fondest memories of sunscreen from childhood, there are now sunscreen formulas in just about every texture and delivery method imaginable. If you want to replace your foundation with tinted sunscreen that also moisturizes and has antioxidant benefits, you got it! If you want to save a step and combine your moisturizer with your sunscreen, no problem.
Whatever you choose, apply it every morning and several times throughout the day to your face, neck, ears, chest, and anywhere else that’s frequently exposed. Every single day. Even if it’s raining, even if you don’t plan on spending too much time outdoors. The results of neglecting sunscreen speak for themselves.
Still insist on looking tan? We get it! Just remember, the only safe way to get bronzed skin for your wedding is to opt for an out-of-the-bottle (or airbrush sprayer) solution. Just as sunscreen has evolved tremendously, so too have sunless tanning options!
Moisturize
No matter your skin type, you need to moisturize your skin. Even those with skin that’s naturally oily or acne-prone require hydration! It’s all about finding the right moisturizer for you. It’s not uncommon for our skin experts to recommend more than one moisturizer to brides-to-be to account for environmental or climate changes or special needs during the day vs. nighttime.
- Hydra-Riche: This gentle moisturizer locks in moisture while simultaneously enhancing the skin’s natural barrier to help it function at optimal levels. Combat dry, crepey skin with this effective, hydrating cream.
- Moistu-Sheer: A unique hyaluronic acid-based, oil-free gel designed to enhance skin moisture and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Excellent under makeup or for oily skin.
- Brite-Nite +: Brite-Nite+ is our skin brightening cream, Brite-Nite, customized for the patient for increased potency and unique skin concerns. (Due to customization this product can only be purchased in-office)
- SkinMedica® HA⁵® Rejuvenating Hydrator: Provides immediate smoothing in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and supports the skin’s natural ability to retain moisture resulting in radiant, rejuvenated tone and texture.
