What is a mommy makeover?

Now, let’s learn a little bit more about our mommy makeover in Dallas. The mommy makeover is what we like to call a combination surgery.

As you might have guessed, combination surgery is a term for when we complete a combination of surgical procedures at the same time to regain the figure and shape before pregnancy.

Those procedures usually include some type of breast surgery (breast augmentation, breast lift, breast implant exchange or any combination of these), a tummy tuck/abdominoplasty and/or liposuction.

These two treatments are both fantastic in their own right, but together, they treat several of the common complaints and insecurities that we hear from postpartum patients. So what exactly does the mommy makeover treat? And how does it work?

What It Treats

The mommy makeover is designed to help women get back the body they had before their pregnancy. Traditionally, when we meet with postpartum patients, they’re interested in restoring their breast shape and/ or size, removing fat, and regaining their pre-pregnancy waistline.

Skin can also become loose and saggy during pregnancy, so we have methods to get rid of that as well.

It is important to note that a patient will get the best results if they are near or at their target weight before we plan for a mommy makeover. Your BMI should be less than 30 as well.

Additionally, patients interested in breast augmentation must be finished with breastfeeding for at least 6 months for any breast procedure since many changes occur after breastfeeding.

The Initial Consultation

The mommy makeover is not a walk-in procedure, but it’s easier than ever to schedule a consultation with our team. The consultation is the first step in our process, and it’s an important one. During this initial meeting, we’ll ask you why you came and what you’re hoping to treat.

From there, we’ll complete a short physical exam so we can get a look at the areas of concern ourselves. Then, we can make a recommendation for treatment. Don’t be afraid to tell us what you’re thinking.

Feel free to ask questions and raise concerns. We want you to be excited about your treatment, and that can’t happen if you have apprehensions.

The Surgical Procedure

We have surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures at Southlake, and the mommy makeover is certainly the former.

For the best, most noticeable results, we need to put you under general anesthesia, meaning that you will be unconscious for the entire duration of the procedure. The length of the surgery depends on a few factors, but most notably the number of treatments you choose.

You may wish to perform liposuction with your abdominoplasty, or you may not. The surgery typically lasts anywhere between 3 and 5 hours in total.

An Expert on Your Side

We’re proud to work with a team of doctors who are dedicated to the art of plastic surgery. Our founder, Dr. Mark E. Mason, MD, still works at our clinic today.

He doesn’t work here for the money, but because he has a genuine passion for cosmetics and helping people look their absolute best. To this day, Dr. Mason contributes to RealSelf.com, a website for those who are looking to learn more about plastic surgery.

Our other doctors, Dinah Wan, MD, and Matthew Novak, MD, are also committed to their craft. And with a team of intelligent, determined nurses and clinic coordinators behind them, you can be sure that your mommy makeover will go off without a hitch.

Breast Augmentation

The first part of the mommy makeover in Dallas is the breast augmentation, which involves the use of breast implants. Women who have given birth may elect to complete a breast augmentation for a number of reasons. Some women find that their breasts have become lopsided or misshapen during the childbearing process.

Others find that their breasts have swelled to uncomfortable sizes. For those patients, we can suggest a breast reduction, which can also be completed during the mommy makeover. Others who want to see their breasts restored to their previous shape without adding volume can consider a breast lift procedure.

Breast augmentation as a part of mommy makeover

The mommy makeover allows you to feel confident in your body again, regardless of your preferences.

On the day of the procedure, we will mark the breasts with a pen to identify the treatment area. From there, we will insert the breast implants.

The breast implants are made of silicone or saline, and if you need help choosing between the two, you can ask your practitioner for their recommendations based on your goals.

We will make an incision in the fold or crease beneath the breast and insert the implant there. We may also insert a drain to manage excess fluids that collect while your body heals.

The specifics of the procedure may change based on a number of factors, so it’s always important to be open and honest with our team during the initial consultation.

Abdominoplasty

The next important step of the mommy makeover in Dallas is a procedure called an abdominoplasty. The abdominoplasty—also known as a “tummy tuck”—is designed to remove loose skin.

During pregnancy, the stomach area swells, and will often leave behind loose skin and stretch marks. Pregnancy also often causes the muscles of the stomach (rectus abdominis) to separate (diastasis recti) which results in the “pooch” that cannot be reduced with diet and exercise.

Many postpartum women try to exercise in order to restore their firm stomachs, but this doesn’t always work. You may find that, despite your diet and exercise habits, you still have loose skin and prominent stretch marks. The abdominoplasty can help you regain a fit, slim appearance.

The abdominoplasty process starts with an incision. We’ll make a pre-marked incision above the pelvic area and around your belly button.

Next, we’ll pull back the skin to gain access to your abdominal muscles. After your stomach muscles are pulled tight together and the excess fat and skin is removed, the skin will be sutured in place which results in a flatter, smoother stomach.

From there, we’ll stitch your skin back in place, leaving you with tighter, smoother skin. You may not want a full abdominoplasty, which is why we also offer a mini tummy tuck. We can customize the procedure to fit your needs, so just let our team know what you’re looking for.

The resulting scar will eventually fade but it will not go away. But don’t worry, your surgeon will make sure to place the incision so that you can wear a bikini if you want.

Liposuction

Another, optional addition that you can make to a mommy makeover in Dallas is liposuction. Liposuction is a process that allows us to directly remove fat from the body.

Most women gain weight during pregnancy, and once their child is born, they’re left with unwanted fat in areas like the hips, thighs, and more.

We have lots of methods for liposuction at Southlake. We can use ultrasonic liposuction which helps break up the fat cells along with a tumescent mixture of lidocaine and saline.

We inject this fluid into the treatment area, numbing your for the suction process. We’ll make strategic incisions in your body and insert a cannula, which removes the fat with suction. The results are natural-looking but noticeable.

Liposuction may make the areas treated very sore and bruised for a few days to a few weeks. You will feel like you had a very tough workout, but over time, the soreness will decrease. You may need drains to help remove the fluid from your body.

If you did not have a great deal of fat to be liposuctioned, you will notice the fluid leaving your body slowly over the next several days. We also recommend lymphatic drainage massage after surgery to help speed up the healing process.

Recovery Process

We’ll walk you through the recovery process following your mommy makeover in Dallas. As the mommy makeover requires surgical treatment, you will need some downtime to recover.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to ensure that the recovery process is as smooth as possible. You may be tempted to put your feet up and relax for your entire recovery, but we do recommend getting up and walking around in the 24 hours following surgery.

Don’t exhaust yourself—we certainly don’t recommend going to the gym or running through your neighborhood. We recommend that you get up and walk as much as possible. This will keep your blood flowing and prevent blood clots.

We also don’t want you to do any heavy lifting. Try to ensure that you’re not lifting anything over ten pounds. Unnecessary strain on the body may cause you problems in the future.

After the surgery is complete, we will mend any incisions we made with stitches and bandage the treatment area with gauze. You also may experience some leakage from the treatment area, so we’ll insert drains for the excess fluid.

You should be able to resume light activity after about a week, but full recovery will take a little longer. Most of our patients feel back to normal after approximately six weeks, but healing may continue for up to six months.

Your scars will take longer to heal. It is important to protect your scars from the sun to prevent hyperpigmentation. You should find that most of your scars are hidden under your bathing suit or clothes, so this shouldn’t be a problem. We will give you a silicone scar gel to speed up healing too.

Further Resources

We often find that patients are more comfortable about the procedure when they know exactly how it all works.

Others would prefer to leave that all to the doctors. We understand either way, but if you were interested in more information about how the mommy makeover in Dallas works, then we’d recommend checking out our video about the procedure.

This informative video outlines the entire surgery in easy-to-understand language with the help of a professional animation. We want to be a resource for our patients whenever possible, so take a look at our animated videos.

But our videos aren’t the only resource we have available to help patients looking for more information about what we do.

At Southlake, we strive to be an information hub for anyone hoping to become more knowledgeable about the aesthetics and cosmetics industry. So, we developed our own personal blog with a number of interesting articles about our treatments and practices.

It doesn’t do anyone any good to keep our methods a mystery, so we’ve taken it upon ourselves to fill our blog with as much valuable information as we can. We have articles about breast augmentation, fillers, and, of course, the mommy makeover in Dallas.
