Breast reconstruction in Southlake, Texas restores the form of the breasts and plays a major role in restoring a woman’s identity and confidence after breast cancer surgery.
Women who are undergoing mastectomy or lumpectomy for breast cancer should visit with a plastic surgeon to discuss options for breast reconstruction. Breast reconstruction can be performed at the same time as or after breast cancer surgery.
The breasts can be reconstructed using implants (e.g., tissue expanders to slowly expand the skin, followed by replacement with permanent silicone implants) or with the patient’s own tissue (e.g., autologous flap from the patient’s abdomen or back).
Certain thinner patients may not have enough belly tissue for free flap reconstruction and are better candidates for implant-based reconstruction.
The nipples can be reconstructed using local flap procedures and 3D tattooing.
Implant-based reconstruction typically involves placing tissue expanders under or above the chest wall muscle at the same time as mastectomy.
This procedure takes approximately 2-3 hours.
The patient typically spends 1-2 nights in the hospital ward to recover from the initial surgery and is then discharged home.
Starting at 2-3 weeks, the patient will begin visiting the clinic regularly for filling of the tissue expanders over the next 6-8 weeks.
After 8-12 weeks, the patient returns to surgery for a shorter day-procedure where the tissue expander is removed and replaced with permanent implants. Fat grafting may also be performed at this time.
Autologous reconstructions using the patient’s own tissues require a longer surgery time (6-8 hours).
After free flap surgery, the patient typically spends 1-3 days in the intensive care unit for close flap monitoring of the flap.
The patient is discharged from the hospital after approximately 1 week and continues the recovery process at home over the next 3-4 weeks.
